EMERGENCY PROGRAM

Provincial program funds dike replacement

Chilliwack

The Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) has committed an estimated $1.5 million in repair and reconstruction of the Wilson Road dike along the Chilliwack River, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General John Les and Minister of Environment Barry Penner announced recently.

Work has begun in the Wilson Road area of the Chilliwack River Valley, located within the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD).

“The Ministry of Environment funded an engineering study earlier this year that will help guide the work taking place now, and will identify the best options for minimizing future flood damage” said Penner. “The Chilliwack River is a wild and unpredictable river, so while water levels have dropped recently, people should continue to exercise extra caution.

Construction is expected to be completed in early 2007 and will be done in three phases:

Phase 1 – urgent flood damage repair to prevent further erosion to the river banks;

Phase 2 – reconstruct the dike built in 2003; and

Phase 3 – FVRD will hold a public meeting to discuss extending this work along the river to protect the whole Wilson Road area.
