New on and off-ramps now open for traffic

Traffic now being diverted away from residential areas and into industrial centre

New on and off-ramps along Highway 1 in Surrey are now open for traffic. Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and British Columbia Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon recently announced the opening of this $2.9 million project, which will improve Port Kells access. The province of B.C. contributed $1.9 million towards the project.

“The co-operation of the federal and provincial governments will make this community more pleasant for everyone” said Minister Cannon. “Canada’s New Government’s contribution of $1 million to this important project will benefit the people and businesses of Surrey” he said.

The ramps will take pressure off the congested 176th Street interchange and give industrial traffic a more direct route into Port Kells. They will also improve safety for area residents by redirecting traffic away from residential areas.

The improvements include an off-ramp from Highway 1 eastbound and an on-ramp onto Highway 1 westbound. About 10,000 vehicles travel through local neighbourhoods along Barnston Drive each day, much of which is industrial traffic shipping goods to and from Port Kells. The new ramps divert traffic directly into the industrial centre via 192nd Street.

In the 2006 Federal Budget, the federal government committed an unprecedented $16.5 billion over the next four years for provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure.
