Two construction workers dead in New York crane collapse
A large crane crashed into a 23-storey apartment building in New York City on Friday, May 30, killing two construction workers, injuring another and forcing hundreds from their homes.
The top section of the crane broke off and smashed into an apartment building killing the operator. The crane, owned by New York Crane Corp., was being used by DeMatteis Organizations to build the Azure, a 32-storey apartment. According to the New York Times, investigators are focusing on whether a faulty welding job was done on the turntable of a crane that was removed from a site more than a year ago.
They suspect the same turntable was on the crane that just fell. Officials are trying to determine whether the crane company was ordered to dispose of the damaged turntable, if the company was authorized to repair it, if the work was done correctly, and if the repairs were signed off on.
