15-year-old boy dies after being buried by asphalt
A teenager is dead after being buried by searing-hot asphalt near Winnipeg.
The 15-year-old boy was helping to unload a truck for Interlake Asphalt Paving on July 25 when the incident occurred.
The truck was dumping a trailer full of asphalt into a massive pile to use for various projects around town. The teen was standing behind the truck when the load fell on him and knocked him over. A couple of co-workers suffered burns to their hands from trying to dig him out.
The boy was identified as Andrew James.
He was to enter Grade 10 in September.
Manitoba’s employment standards prohibits people under 16 years of age from working on construction sites.
RCMP and officials with the province’s Workplace Safety and Health are investigating the incident.
The company could face charges because of the boy’s age.
